A Look Inside the Intense Senior Competition

It’s shoot or be shot out here as the 2023 Senior Assassin’s competition is in full swing and more competitive than ever. Assassins is an annual high school competition that the years’ graduating class pays to be in, contributing to a winner’s pot that one skilled senior wins at the end of the game. As we’re in the midst of different rounds the competition has slowed down since many people have already been eliminated and only the best of the best still stand.

Round one started off with a bang as the seniors were anticipating the elimination of their targets and the threat of their own assassins. The overall goal of the game: find and eliminate your target before your assassin finds you. It may seem easy for some, but the various rules set in place make it more of a challenge.

Even with the rules, the competition stays ruthless. In the first round there were numerous take downs that took the class of 24’ by surprise. Friends were pinned against each other, leading to betrayals among one another. Seniors Alex Ridge and Ava Meier, two close friends, were pinned against one another in the start of round one, initiating a brutal start.  If you found yourself in the competition would you have your friends’ backs no matter what? Or would you do whatever it takes to win even if that means betraying your people? It’s a tough decision but when over $1,000 is on the line, that decision quickly becomes easier.

Some of the players this year have posed themselves as real threats with consistent kills from each round under their belt. Senior Hunter Noravong has been a player to keep an eye on. Locking down the first elimination of round three, Hunter now has a total of three takedowns to his name. Hunter’s most notable kill so far has been the elimination of fellow senior classmate, Stella Roth. Going above and beyond, Hunter reached out to not only one but two mutual friends from St. James and Rockhurst, got the Rockhurst friend to hang out with Stella, hid in the friend’s car trunk, and went in for the kill. Being such an advanced player, it seemed important to ask about his go-to water weapon. The Funwee 2-pack Electric Water Guns, Full Automatic Electric Squirt Gun High Capacity 500+ Water Blasts, and 28-32 FT Range Water Pistol Blaster Soaker seem to do the job well for him. Hunter is only one of the many competitors who have proved that they’re in this game to win it; no mercy in sight.

It takes a lot of work to set up a class competition with the majority of the class participating in the game. Seniors Paige Mcmillan and Sydney Zinkus thankfully stepped up and decided to run the game. Both girls agreed with the hardest part being making sure that all players understand the rules of the game so that it is played fairly. With many close friends assigned to one another, the question of whether or not there was purposeful matches. The girls, however, informed me that they use an online spinner, typing in everyone’s names and going down the list as the spinner is spun. With so many students participating in the game, one would assume it took a long time to plan out; the girls said that wasn’t the case though, only looking at last years’ game rules, tweaking a few they felt needed to be changed, and sent a text to the Class of 24’ GroupMe informing everyone that the game would be going on. With front row seats to the progression of the game, the girls were asked who they thought had the most impressive elimination. Liam Sapp took the spot, waiting outside his target’s house for five hours. Luckily,  his wait ended in a secured kill. Thanks to Sydney and Paige, the game has so far run pretty smoothly with only a few mishaps along the way.

Saints, keep your eye out for who the most skilled assassin is because not too long from now there will be a winner and take home the title of the Class of 24’s Senior Assassin champion.
